Medley Town Council Lifts Height Restrictions On Commercial Buildings

“I just received a call from a company that seeks to build the world’s tallest building here,” said Medley Mayor Roberto Martell. “The sky is now the limit.”

The prior building height limit was 50 feet, said Martell, who was recently named to the South Florida Regional Council which seeks to “implement a vision” for Southeast Florida.

Along with visions of future skyscrapers that would change the Miami area skyline, Martell said that there has been talk of adding a large sports arena, a large medical center and a skyrail. Big business will flock to Medley, he said, because of lower property values, lower taxes and the town’s close proximity to Miami International Airport.

“We expect to create thousands of jobs in Medley,” Martell said.

More than 50,000 people commute to the 5.5 square-mile town each day to work at one of the 1,500 businesses there that include FedEx, Waste Management, Sisco and Seaboard Marine.

Martell said that he envisions Medley, population 1,200, becoming a South Florida business hub and expects future growth to serve as a catalyst for neighbors that include Doral, Virginia Gardens, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens and Miami Springs.

“All major, local roads lead to Medley,” Martell said.

Medley connects to the Florida Turnpike, I-75 and the Dolphin and Palmetto Expressways and has recently approved spending $18 million for infrastructure repairs that include sprucing up an old park, reparing roads and adding bicycle lanes along Southwest River Dr.

“We also have the potential to become a major inland port,” said Martell.

He also pointed out that the town is also benefiting from additional Florida East Coast Railroad growth in its backyard.

“We will have everything you can think of in this town,” Martell said.
